Not Bad at All

Gallup/USA Today Poll: McCain +4

Republican presidential candidate John McCain moved from being behind by 6 points among "likely" voters a month ago to a 4-point lead over Democrat Barack Obama among that group in the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. McCain still trails slightly among the broader universe of "registered" voters. By both measures, the race is tight.

The Friday-Sunday poll, mostly conducted as Obama was returning from his much-publicized overseas trip and released just this hour, shows McCain now ahead 49%-45% among voters that Gallup believes are most likely to go to the polls in November. In late June, he was behind among likely voters, 50%-44%.

New Law Targets Illegal Immigrants

A year after Prince William County launched a crackdown on illegal immigrants, Virginia has implemented a law that requires something similar for every jurisdiction in the state. Jail officials are now required to notify federal authorities of all foreign-born inmates regardless of their immigration status.

NJ Sen. Menendez Now Blocking E-Verify

E-Verify (the effective program to keep illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs) now is facing danger in the Senate, as well as the House (see my previous blogs on House troubles).

The NumbersUSA Capitol Hill Team has been told that Sen. Menendez (D-N.J.) has put a "hold" on legislation to reauthorize the E-Verify workplace verification program. That means the Senate is barred from voting to keep it alive. Without a vote, E-Verify will die in November.

Real Man of Genius

Republican Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama responded to Majority Leader Harry Reid's comment about not having enough time to debate a bill with this superb line:

Mr. President, I say to Senator Alexander, I have great affection for the Democratic leader, but I just could not agree with his statement that we do not have time. We have a whole month coming up for which we are supposedly going home for recess. Our soldiers are working 7 days a week, with 15-hour days. This Congress cannot stand to stay in session a while and confront this issue and do some things we know will work?

That is truly a person who understands the situation in this country. Mr. Sessions understands that debate on behalf of the American people is more important than taking vacation off. We need more people in the Senate to be like Mr. Sessions, even though I think he was wrong on the bailout bill, he has been right on mostly every other piece of legislation. If our soldiers our risking their lives day in and day out, surely Congress can debate more on items that really affect this country. Thankfully there are some other Senators like Mr. Sessions like Senators Coburn and Inhofe of Oklahoma, Senator Demint of South Carolina, Senator Kyl of Arizona, Senator Enzi of Nevada, and a few others. If only Mr. Sessions quote would receive more attention, but alas that is not important because instead we have a leader in the Senate even if nobody in the media recognizes him.

I Still Don't Get It

Meet Wins Again

mtplogo_7-26.jpgThe number one Sunday morning public affairs show last week was, once again, NBC's Meet the Press, in Total Viewers and the A25-54 demo.

In both categories, NBC finished first, followed by CBS and FOX. ABC's This Week was preempted by the British Open.

Week-to-week, NBC and CBS saw big gains in viewership, while FOX saw a slight decline.

NBC's Meet the Press had 3,684,000 Total Viewers, CBS' Face the Nation had 2,546,000 and FOX News Sunday had 1,127,000.


Why is this happening? Fox News Sunday trailed when Tony Snow was on the channel which is unbelievable and now are behind with a great interviewer like Chris Wallace. It's sad that Fox News Sunday lost to Face the Nation too when FTN has a horrible interviewer. Also, last week Al Gore was on the program mostly on MTP, which maybe explains why there were so many viewers; the left were trying to get their new and improved talking points. I know I still will support Chris Wallace because of his skills as an interviewer and the panel that he has for the second part of the show. It makes for a superb show week in and week out. More people need to support Fox News Sunday. Keep telling people how great this show really is.
