Tonight's second presidential debate will be moderated by Tom Brokaw. At least this moderator does not have book coming out on inauguration day about Barack Obama. Tonight's debate is very important to Senator McCain's chances of winning the presidency on November 4. The economy is not doing so well and with an unpopular president and a country tired of war this election is looking like it is moving closer and closer in Obama's favor. This year was supposed to be a Democratic year, but somehow Senator McCain and the Republican Party has survived up until now.
This debate is important because it will mostly be about the economy; the most important issue in American's minds. If Senator McCain wants to convince the American people that he is ready to lead on the foreign policy front and on the economy, he must be strong tonight and clear on what are his exact plans for this country going forward. Senator McCain needs to explain to the American people why his tax cuts for the so called rich and corporations will benefit the American people. I have been calling for him to do this for quite some time, but still has not explicitly explained why his economic plans are good for America. The economy should be a strong point for Republicans, but they have not done well explaining why their tax cutting plans are good for America. Senator McCain should invoke President Ronald Reagan and explain that when he cut taxes there was an economic boom. Senator McCain should invoke Ronald Reagan as long as it pertains to the economic issue at hand.
If Senator McCain wants to win he should stop saying he is a maverick without explaining what are his exact plans and why they are good for this country. The Saturday Night Live skit where it mocked Governor Palin was spot on because just saying you are a maverick is not enough to sway voter's opinions. Real issues need real solutions and not just talk about the type of person that you are. Tonight's debate is McCain's strength because it is a townhall style debate forum. Senator McCain has been doing this before and these townhall meetings are actually how many have gravitated to supporting his candidacy. Senator McCain originally proposed 10 townhall style debates to Senator Obama, but Obama turned his offer down. As long as Senator McCain sounds like he has real answers to America's problems and explains them as thoroughly as he can, he can potentially win tonight's debate. This is your night Senator McCain. Make or break the country's future.
