Great Another Bailout

Government aid could save U.S. newspapers, spark debate

Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:50pm EST

By Robert MacMillan - Analysis

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Connecticut lawmaker Frank Nicastro sees saving the local newspaper as his duty. But others think he and his colleagues are setting a worrisome precedent for government involvement in the U.S. press.

Nicastro represents Connecticut's 79th assembly district, which includes Bristol, a city of about 61,000 people outside Hartford, the state capital. Its paper, The Bristol Press, may fold within days, along with The Herald in nearby New Britain.

The Clintons Never Disappear

NY Democratic advisers talk up 'caretaker' senator

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Bill Clinton? Sen. Mario Cuomo? Don't completely rule it out. The former president and the former New York governor are among several boldface names being touted as possible "caretakers" for New York's Senate seat — people who would serve until the 2010 elections but wouldn't be interested in running to keep the job.

As the process of picking Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's replacement gets messier, the option may become increasingly attractive to Gov. David Paterson, who has sole authority to name a successor.

Does it Mean Something?

Minnesota Secy of State Not Happy with 'Premature' Franken Claim

December 31, 2008 3:16 PM

The podcast is available on iTunes or HERE.

As I mentioned a little while ago, in our ABC News Shufflle Podcast interview, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie didn't quite care for Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken's comment that "it looks like we’re on track to win. ... Now, there’s more to do before it’s over -- there are still some Minnesotans whose voices haven’t been heard yet because their absentee ballots were improperly rejected. But when those votes are counted and the recount is complete, I believe we will have won this election.”

There Might be a Ground Offensive

The Israel Defense Forces recommended a major, but relatively short-term, ground offensive in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, as military preparations continued on the border. The army was given the green light to forge ahead with Operation Cast Lead, which enters its sixth day Thursday.

This is Just the Provocation that Russia Needs to Act

Russia-Ukraine gas row heats up

A war of words has broken out in a gas supply row between Ukraine and Russia, amid claims that supplies to Europe could be under threat.

As a midnight deadline loomed, Russian PM Vladimir Putin accused Kiev of threatening to block supplies piped through Ukraine to Western Europe.

What Can be Said About the Protesters?

You would think by watching the television coverage of the protesters in the Middle East or in London, that Israel has committed a huge catastrophic crime against humanity and that they are attacking Gaza for no reason. Pictures of "Holocaust in Gaza" appear on the television screen thanks to these protesters. So what was Israel supposed to do, just sit and do nothing and continue to live in fear whether or not a rocket would would come through their living room by the hands of Hamas? The argument that Israel is committing a Holocaust against the Palestinian people is really foolish. Israel is doing what they have to do in defending its citizens and any country would do the exact same thing. Some argue that it is not a proportionate response, but as I have posted before that argument is absurd.  I have said before and will say again it is a shame that some innocent civilians are being killed who may not be radical Islamic extremists, but you know what, I do not regret Israel attacking Gaza for one minute. Finally, after seven years of constant rocket attacks Israel is protecting its citizens. Now we wait to see if they crack under international pressure or they still have a committed goal in protecting its citizens and the only way to show they care about their people is with a ground invasion.

What's Worse: Madoff Scandal or the Bailout Scandal?

This was brought up on the Mark Levin show from a caller about a week ago I think and I just could not get this out of my mind. It's interesting to note that what the government is doing is really no different than what Madoff did to his investors. Both are scams intended to take money from other people. The government is taking Americans hard earned money because companies are failing and supposedly if they declare bankruptcy or fail, then there will be an even bigger crisis. Yes, Madoff stole $50 billion from his investors, but the United States government is stealing a lot more from its citizens. I never knew in the United States of America, the government would be allowed to scam and steal from its citizens because they said so. It's a shame those who lost their money because of Madoff, but the American taxpayers also are suffering from these bailouts.

What is a Proportionate Response?

In a short post on Contentions, a blog on commentary magazine website, Michael J. Totten tries to discern what a proportionate response would look like in regards to the situation in Gaza. It's hysterical because that is how stupid the argument is.

Here it is:

Hmm... Could the Sun have an Impact on the Temperature?

As we've noted, 2008 has been a year of records for cold and snowfall and may indeed be the coldest year of the 21st century thus far. In the U.S., the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month of October.

Global thermometers stopped rising after 1998, and have plummeted in the last two years by more than 0.5 degrees Celsius. The 2007-2008 temperature drop was not predicted by global climate models. But it was predictable by a decline in sunspot activity since 2000.

When the sun is active, it's not uncommon to see sunspot numbers of 100 or more in a single month. Every 11 years, activity slows, and numbers briefly drop near zero. Normally sunspots return very quickly, as a new cycle begins. But this year, the start of a new cycle, the sun has been eerily quiet.

The first seven months averaged a sunspot count of only three and in August there were no sunspots at all — zero — something that has not occurred since 1913.

I Thought San Franciscoans are Tolerant?

Influx of black renters raises tension in Bay Area

Dec 30, 3:24 PM (ET)

By PAUL ELIAS

ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) - As more and more black renters began moving into this mostly white San Francisco Bay Area suburb a few years ago, neighbors started complaining about loud parties, mean pit bulls, blaring car radios, prostitution, drug dealing and muggings of schoolchildren.

In 2006, as the influx reached its peak, the police department formed a special crime-fighting unit to deal with the complaints, and authorities began cracking down on tenants in federally subsidized housing.

Hamas Legalizes Crucifixion

Both Iran and its Hamas proxy in Gaza have been busy this Christmas week showing Christendom just what they think of it. But no one seems to have noticed.

On Tuesday, Hamas legislators marked the Christmas season by passing a Shari'a criminal code for the Palestinian Authority. Among other things, it legalizes crucifixion.

Hamas's endorsement of nailing enemies of Islam to crosses came at the same time it renewed its jihad. Here, too, Hamas wanted to make sure that Christians didn't feel neglected as its fighters launched missiles at Jewish day care centers and schools. So on Wednesday, Hamas lobbed a mortar shell at the Erez crossing point into Israel just as a group of Gazan Christians were standing on line waiting to travel to Bethlehem for Christmas.

This is Iran

Hundreds of Iranians storm British compound in Tehran over Gaza attacks

(AFP/Getty)

The security breach at the Tehran compound was unprecedented in recent years

Hundreds of Iranian radicals stormed the British compound in Tehran last night, replacing the Union flag with a Palestinian one in protest against Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

British officials will be assessing whether the security breach, unprecedented in recent years, was an isolated incident or presages further violent demonstrations.

President Bush Still Defends Israel's Air Strikes

The only way Hamas will stop firing rockets on Israel is if they are completely destroyed. There cannot be any negotiations because a. who knows Hamas will stop firing rockets at Israel and most importantly b. Hamas does not recognize Israel's right to exist. Hamas will not stop firing rockets until Israel is destroyed so why should Israel let their citizens continue to die or get injured for the sake of appeasing a terrorist organization and other countries. This operation shows so far even with the protests, Israel is determined to go forward in trying to decimate Hamas' capabilities to fire rockets at Israel. The question is now as it has happened time and time again whether or not Israel will crack under international pressure.

The way to show that they should be taken seriously is to move forward with a ground invasion. Yes, Israeli soldiers'' lives will be lost, but this is the only way to show Israel's determination in fighting terrorists who try to do their citizens harm. This ground invasion will also show that even amid international pressure, Israel is doing what is right by its citizenry. This is Israel's real test to see if they really care about destroying terrorist organizations or they care more about how other countries think about them. I hope Israel will rise to the challenge and move forward with a ground invasion and then hopefully decimate Hamas.

Correction: I made a mistake when I first posted this; I misunderstood and thought that President Bush is no longer defending Israel's air strikes, but instead he wants peace to occur and the way to do that is for Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel
