House passes the 13th Amendment
The
U.S. House of Representatives passes the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution, abolishing slavery in the United States. It read,
"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the
United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

1876 - All American Indians were ordered to move to reservations
1940 - The first Social Security check was issued by the U.S. Government.
1945 - Private Eddie Slovik became the only U.S. soldier since the U.S. Civil War to be executed for desertion.

Truman announces development of H-bomb
U.S.
President Harry S. Truman publicly announces his decision to support
the development of the hydrogen bomb, a weapon theorized to be hundreds
of times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during
World War II.

Viet Cong attack U.S. Embassy
As
part of the Tet Offensive, Viet Cong soldiers attack the U.S. Embassy
in Saigon. A 19-man suicide squad seized the U.S. Embassy and held it
for six hours until an assault force of U.S. paratroopers landed by
helicopter on the building's roof and routed them.
