Supreme Court legalizes abortion

In a historic decision, the U.S. Supreme Court rules in Roe v. Wade that women, as part of their constitutional right to privacy, can terminate a pregnancy during its first two trimesters. Only during the last trimester, when the fetus can survive outside the womb, would states be permitted to regulate abortion of a healthy pregnancy.

Reagan links arms talks with Soviets to oppression in Poland

In a revival of the diplomacy "linkages" that were made famous by Henry Kissinger during the Nixon years, the administration of President Ronald Reagan announces that further progress on arms talks will be linked to a reduction of Soviet oppression in Poland. The U.S. ploy was but one more piece of the increasingly complex jigsaw puzzle of nuclear arms reduction.

Obama Retakes the Oath with No Bible

Obama Sworn In Again, With Right Words

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, January 22, 2009; A04

In golf, they call it a mulligan. A do-over.

There's no formal name for what President Obama and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. did last night.

After a flawless recitation that included no Bible and took 25 seconds, Roberts smiled and said, "Congratulations, again."

More on Geithner

As I promised I would post Byron York's new story up on National Review Online about the confirmation hearing of Timothy Geithner.

Here is some of it:

Timothy Geithner’s Story
The treasury secretary-designate tries to explain his unpaid taxes.

By Byron York

Give Timothy Geithner credit. He has a story, and he’s sticking to it. Even if it’s not the whole story.

When the treasury secretary-designate walked into his confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee Wednesday morning, he knew he would face questions, from Republicans at least, about his non-payment of Social Security and Medicare taxes in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Reagan Still at the Top

Obama's inauguration most-watched since Reagan's

UPDATED: Here's another way Barack Obama's inauguration made history.

Nielsen Media Research says 37.8 million TV viewers watched Tuesday's coverage -- the largest inaugural audience in decades.

Obama's viewership is bigger than any presidential inauguration in 28 years. It's 27% higher than Bill Clinton's in 1993 and 30% larger than George Bush's in 2001. Ronald Reagan's first inauguration in 1981 drew a larger tally, however, with 41.8 million.

Top Media Moments Presented by the Wonderful Media Research Center

1. 'Honor of Our Lifetimes' for All Left-Wing MSNBC Anchor Team
Abandoning any pretense of balance, MSNBC's Inauguration coverage will be quad-anchored by four left-wingers: the network's three night time hosts -- Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow -- plus regular analyst Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post. has finaPlugging the team at the end of the 7 PM EST Hardball on Monday night, Matthews trumpeted how "this is one of the great opportunities in journalism to cover history in the face" and declared "it's going to be the honor of our lifetimes."

Here are the rest of their top media moments:

I Hope Matthews Fails

Chris Matthews: 'Does Rush Limbaugh Hate This Country?'

Updated below.

Chris Matthews questioned Rush Limbaugh’s patriotism on Wednesday night’s "Hardball," as the MSNBC host wondered how the radio talk show host could dare to oppose Barack Obama as he exclaimed to his viewers: "Does Rush Limbaugh hate this country?" Matthews jumped on a quote from Limbaugh saying of Obama, "I hope he fails," apparently not understanding the concept that Limbaugh opposes any and all who would promote liberal policies precisely because he believes they will be harmful to the country.

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/geoffrey-dickens/2009/01/21/chris-matthews-does-rush-limbaugh-hate-country

Once I heard Rush's quote, it was only obvious that the liberal media will try so spin it in a way to make it look like he hates this country. The quote is explained above and Rush's point was saying that he wants his liberal policies to fail, as do I. Matthews learns from his mater Keith Olbermann who loves to take only part of what someone is saying to fit his own agenda. This should not be misconstrued and there is no spin here, I hope the media fails.

Democrats in Power Doing Their Best at Suppressing Opposition

Given that, plus a number of other issues involved in the nomination — TARP, anyone? — a number of committee members had a lot of questions they wanted to submit to Geithner in writing.  So, after today's hearing ended sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., Baucus decreed that all written questions had to be submitted by 5 p.m. Geithner is required to submit his answers in writing by 10 a.m. Thursday — that is, tomorrow — and then senators will be given about half an hour to assess those answers before they vote on Geithner's nomination.

There will be a story written by Byron York, the writer of the above material, soon on National Review Online. He has been following this whole Geithner fiasco. What he wrote was a post that was on "The Corner" blog on National Review Online.

Here is the rest of it:

I Truly Hope That Senators Oppose Tim Geithner for Secretary Treasury

I have written about this before, but this has continued to bother me. The illegal immigrant that he had employed in his house does not bother me so much as that he did not pay his taxes, but still received compensation that he is supposed to receive only after he paid his taxes. For an average person who does not pay their taxes, then can go to jail, but in the Washington DC culture, you get a promotion. Only in Washington DC can this occur where bad deeds are awarded with prizes and awards and promotions. He said it was an honest mistake, but this mistake occurred over a number of years. So if he screws up our financial system, will he just state that he made another honest mistake and that we should not worry because he is sorry. Of course people do make honest mistakes all the time, but not paying your taxes for years and taking in money that is undeserved is not an honest mistake. This person can't pay his taxes, yet he wants to take charge of the United States' treasury.

Also, which I completely missed until it was brought up on the Glenn Beck show on Fox News, Geithner is the one who devised the whole TARP mess. So again, another honest mistake I guess he could say, but thanks to the DC culture, he gets a better job. This should not be a partisan issue, instead it should be a common sense issue, but in Washington DC common sense seems to be consistently lacking. If Republicans do not oppose Geithner for the sake of bipartisanship, well I do not know what to say really because recently I have called the Republican Party dead, but could then the party become really dead. I know Senator DeMint will probably oppose Geithner because he is the only true conservative that conservatives can trust in the Senate. The question is will others stand with him in opposing a man who can't pay his own taxes, yet wants to run the IRS. I truly hope so.

Only Diplomacy is on the Table for the New Obama Administration

Is “Unacceptable” Now Merely “Troubling”?

Rick Richman - 01.21.2009 - 7:59 AM

The new White House website is up, and one can “Read the President’s entire agenda” with a single click.

Under “Foreign Policy,” there are sub-headings covering different issues, most with multiple bullet-points.  Here is the entire entry for Iran:

The only option that is listed for Iran is diplomacy. There is no other option listed on the website. Also, if you read the statement, it says that the Iran situation is troubling. You would think a country who wants to blow up another country with nuclear weapons makes the situation more than troubling.

On the New Hope and Change Website the New President Criticizes the Former President

President Obama will keep the broken promises made by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He and Vice President Biden will take steps to ensure that the federal government will never again allow such catastrophic failures in emergency planning and response to occur.

Scroll down to the part on Katrina:

If President Obama still enjoys criticizing Former President Bush, then he should have no reservations or qualms in saying when the former president is right on any issue.
