"Obama's Rule of Law"

Obama’s Rule of Law
The politicization of information disclosure.

By Andrew C. McCarthy

Remember all those sermons about “restoring the rule of law,” a condition from which we supposedly deviated during the Bush administration? Remember how committed President Obama, Attorney General Holder, and the new administration were to ensuring that justice is not “politicized”? Fine words, but today the Obama administration is engaged in a blatantly politicized use of document declassification.

You Mean There Are Problems With the Stimulus Plan

Biden's rosy report can't hide stimulus problems

By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

This week, the White House released its first quarterly report on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the $787 billion stimulus bill. Reaction on Capitol Hill was swift: Republicans think it's a joke, while Democrats don't want to talk about it.

The report was unveiled not by President Obama but by Vice President Joe Biden, who said it "shows early progress providing immediate financial relief for American families and jump-starting billions of dollars in job-creating projects." In a press release, Biden claimed the stimulus has so far "created or saved" 150,000 jobs, and that "over 3,000 transportation construction projects have been funded in 52 states and territories."

You don't have to look too hard to find problems with Biden's work. First, nobody seems to know precisely where the figure of 150,000 jobs comes from. When President Obama used it in a speech on April 29, the website FactCheck.org pretty much demolished the claim. Previewing the Biden report on May 11, a "senior administration official" held a conference-call briefing with reporters and seemed unprepared when asked where the created-or-saved jobs actually are. "In terms of exactly where and in what sectors, that's not something I have numbers on," the official said, "because, precisely, we don't yet have any of the reporting."

Politics at Justice

Politics? What Politics?
Eric Holder says there are no politics at Justice. So what happened in Missouri?

By Hans A. von Spakovsky

During the Bush administration, liberals in Congress and the mainstream media were obsessed with allegations of “politicization” of the Justice Department. So it is amazing to watch the Obama Justice Department making what seem to be purely political decisions with absolutely no concern expressed by those same congressional and journalistic liberals. The latest example of the Left’s ostrich mentality is the dismissal by the Civil Rights Division of a National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) lawsuit filed against Missouri by the Bush Justice Department four years ago. The dismissal has gone conspicuously unmentioned on the division’s website.

MYFOXNY.COM - This week, thousands of people are getting stimulus checks in the mail. The problem is that a lot of them are dead. A Long Island woman was shocked when she checked the mail and received a letter from the U.S. Treasury -- but it wasn't for her.

Obama Administration Says No to Cheney

Obama Administration to Cheney: Request Denied

The Obama administration has turned down former Vice President Dick Cheney’s request for the declassification of two CIA reports on the effectiveness of the Agency’s detainee program, THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned. A letter dated May 7, 2009, from the CIA’s Information and Privacy Coordinator, Delores M. Nelson, rejected Cheney’s request because the documents he has requested are involved in a Freedom of Information Act court battle.

Not Just Yet for Same-Sex Marriage in New Hampshire

Governor not ready to sign gay marriage bill

By TOM FAHEY
State House Bureau Chief

Gov. John Lynch said he will veto the same-sex marriage bill if it does not change before it gets to his desk.

He said his main concern is that the bill, HB 436, and a companion bill don’t provide enough legal protection for religious groups or institutions opposed to the concept.

He has provided legislative leaders with wording that will satisfy him and is leaving it to the House and Senate to move next.

Looks Like Specter Might Change His Mind Again

Specter raises hopes for deal on major labor bill

Specter says `prospects are pretty good' for bill making it easier for workers to form unions

  • On Thursday May 14, 2009, 3:31 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Arlen Specter said Thursday the "prospects are pretty good" for a compromise on legislation making it easier for workers to form unions.

Specter had come out against the bill in March, disappointing labor leaders. They had hoped he would be the crucial 60th vote needed to overcome an expected GOP filibuster of the Employee Free Choice Act.

Pelosi Says CIA Lied to Her

Pelosi claims CIA lied to her about waterboarding
Posted: 05/14/09 11:23 AM [ET]

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) counterattacked the CIA on Thursday, asserting that the agency lied to her about waterboarding.

The Speaker also acknowledged she first learned suspects were being waterboarded in 2003, after her then-national security aide, Mike Sheehy, sat in on a February briefing with Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), Pelosi's successor as chairwoman of the House Intelligence panel.

May 14th in American History

May 14, 1787

Constitutional Convention delegates begin to assemble

On this day in 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention begin to assemble in Philadelphia to confront a daunting task: the peaceful overthrow of the new American government as defined by the Article of Confederation. Although the convention was originally supposed to begin on May 14, James Madison reported that “a small number only had assembled.” Meetings had to be pushed back until May 25, when a sufficient quorum of the participating states--Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia—had arrived.
