Even with No Official Announcement, It will be Sestak Against Specter

Tape: Sestak running against Specter

Contrary to claims by his people to me this afternoon, Philly-area Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak clearly told the Wayne Independent he's running against incumbent Arlen Specter in the '10 Democratic primary, according to the recording of an interview provided to POLITICO by the reporter.

Sestak's people pushed back when reporter Steve McConnell posted a story quoting the former Navy Rear Admiral as saying he was "going to" run against Specter.

More Polls Turning Against Obama

Public Support for Sotomayor Falls After Supreme Court Reversal

A heavily publicized U.S. Supreme Court reversal of an appeals court ruling by Judge Sonia Sotomayor has at least temporarily diminished public support for President Obama's first Supreme Court nominee.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, conducted on the two nights following the Supreme Court decision, finds that 37% now believe Sotomayor should be confirmed while 39% disagree.

Two weeks ago, the numbers were much brighter for the nominee. At that time, 42% favored confirmation, and 34% were opposed.

The Democrats are Very Good at This

PRLDEF dumps 350 pages of S'mayor docs

The Hispanic advocacy group with close ties to Sonia Sotomayor has dumped hundreds of documents on the Judiciary Committee, which demanded them in a letter last month, the AP reports.

The hot stuff: Papers pertaining to the group's opposition to Robert Bork and S'mayor's possible involvement in that effort and PRLDEF's links to ACORN.

Gillibrand Has an Opponent in Next Year's Senate Election in NY

Rep. Maloney vows to challenge Sen. Gillibrand for Senate seat in primary

Wednesday, July 1st 2009, 4:00 AM

Rep. Carolyn Maloney has decided to take on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the 2010 Democratic primary, refusing to bow to party leaders who want her to stay out, the Daily News has learned.

"She's definitely decided to run," said a senior Maloney adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity. "She's in it."

Maloney, a congresswoman since 1993 for Manhattan's East Side and a slice of Queens, will make an official announcement in two weeks, the adviser said.

Another Day Another Firing of an Inspector General

Who Railroaded the Amtrak Inspector General?
by Michelle Malkin

Watchdogs are an endangered species in the Age of Obama. The latest government ombudsman to get the muzzle: Amtrak Inspector General Fred Weiderhold. The longtime veteran employee was abruptly "retired" this month -- just as the government-subsidized rail service faces mounting complaints about its meddling in financial audits and probes.

Question the timing? Hell, yes.

Cynthia McKinney Demands Immediate Release After Her Gaza-Bound Boat is Seized by Israeli Navy

Former U.S. lawmaker and Green Party leader Cynthia McKinney, a longtime activist for the Palestinians, says her boat, the Spirit of Humanity, was carrying medical supplies, cement, olive trees and children's toys to Gaza when it was seized by an Israeli navy ship.

Former U.S. lawmaker and Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney, whose relief boat was seized by an Israeli naval ship Tuesday for the second time in a year, is demanding the immediate release of her and 20 other activists.

McKinney, a longtime supporter of Palestinians, said her Greek-flagged boat, the Spirit of Humanity, was carrying medical supplies, cement, olive trees and children's toys to Gaza when it was boarded by the Israeli navy.

Honduran Ex-President Tied to Drugs? What a Shocker

Zelaya accused of drug ties

BOGOTA – The regime that ousted Manuel Zelaya in Honduras claimed Tuesday that the deposed president allowed tons of cocaine to be flown into the Central American country on its way to the United States.

"Every night, three or four Venezuelan-registered planes land without the permission of appropriate authorities and bring thousands of pounds ... and packages of money that are the fruit of drug trafficking," its foreign minister, Enrique Ortez, told CNN en Espanol.

"We have proof of all of this. Neighboring governments have it. The DEA has it," he added.

Let's Just Talk to Another Dictator

Ousted Honduran leader Zelaya likely to meet US officials
Jun 30 03:43 PM US/Eastern

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya will likely meet US officials in Washington, though not with President Barack Obama or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, officials said Tuesday.

Zelaya said Monday he would visit Washington on Wednesday before returning to his country, following the coup that ousted him, and the White House and State Department expected him to meet State Department officials.

Certificate Not Ordered in Minnesota Senate Race

Certificate is not specifically ordered

By Eric Black | Published Tue, Jun 30 2009 1:13 pm

Haven't read the whole thing yet. The court does affirm that "Al Franken received the highest number of votes legally cast and is entitled under Minn. 32 Stat. § 204C.40 (2008) to receive the certificate of election as United States Senator from the State of Minnesota."

But so far as I can see so far, the court did not explicitly order Gov. Pawlenty to issue the certificate. If that's right, it may leave him without the explicit guidance he was seeking on how long to wait before certifying.

Norm Coleman to Go to Federal Court?

Franken Declared Winner in Minnesota Senate Race

GOP Incumbent Norm Coleman Expected to File Lawsuit, Final Outcome Could Take Weeks

Two months after Minnesota voters went to the polls, Democrat Al Franken has been declared the winner of the U.S. Senate race, but his opponent, Republican incumbent Norm Coleman, is ready to challenge the results in court.

Franken, the comedian and former radio host, won the razor-close election recount by just 225 votes out of nearly 3 million cast on Nov. 4. Speaking in Saint Paul, Franken declared victory but acknowledged the potential for an ongoing legal battle.
