Iranian Ayatollah Issues Fatwa Against Regime

Iranian Ayatollah Montazeri Issues Fatwa Against the Regime

On July 11, 2009, the liberal Iranian website www.khandaniha.eu published a fatwa by Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, the most senior contemporary Shi'ite cleric. The fatwa was issued in response to a series of queries submitted to him by Iranian intellectual and cleric Mohsen Kadivar, pertaining to the legitimacy of the current Iranian government.

The following are excerpts from the fatwa: [1]

Query: "What is the ruling regarding holders of government positions, whom shari'a law requires to act justly, honestly, and wisely... if they [do not fulfill] these requirements to any degree, but behave in a manner diametrically opposed to them?"

Reply: "If none of the requirements mentioned in this query are met, this automatically, and without any need for impeachment, brings about the de facto collapse of the velayat [the 'jurisprudent,' meaning Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei] and of the government that is in charge of administering social affairs [i.e. the government of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] - and renders null and void all decrees issued by those who hold government positions...

This is Just Awful News

If a Teleprompter Falls in the White House Does It Make a Sound?

July 13, 2009 5:32 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Jake Tapper report: If a teleprompter falls in the White House, does it make a sound?

Yes, especially when it’s the President’s teleprompter – or TOTUS as it is often referred to.

Midway through his speech on urban and metropolitan policy in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building this afternoon, one of his two small glass prompters came crashing down, hitting the wood floor and crashing in many pieces. It made quite a ruckus.

“Oh, goodness,” a startled President Obama said. “Sorry about that, guys.”

More Americans Who are Married are Republicans

Marriage Remains Key Predictor of Party Identification

Married Americans tilt Republican; unmarried Americans, Democratic

by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- A Gallup analysis of more than 29,000 interviews conducted in June highlights a continuing and significant marriage gap in party identification. The percentage of all Americans who identified as Republican in June was 28%, but is higher at 33% among those who are married, and a lower 21% among unmarried Americans. On the other hand, Democratic identification in June was at 35% overall, but 31% among married Americans, and 41% among those who are not married. This marriage gap in party identification is evident across races as well as age groups.

The "Roe" in Roe v Wade was One of the Protesters During the Sotomayor Confirmation Hearing

"Jane Roe" arrested at S'mayor hearing

Norma McCorvey — "Jane Roe" in the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion case — was one of four people arrested for shouting anti-abortion slogans during the Sotomayor hearing today, ABC News is reporting, citing the Capitol Police.

The 61-year-old Texan is now a religious Roman Catholic and anti-abortion activist.

I would just like to say that the protesters today disturbed me a lot. If you want to protest fine, but don't interrupt a hearing or any other important business. Because what these pro-life activists did today is no different than the Code Pink protests. This is no way to spread your message. Instead, it turns many more people against you.

Not Many Jobs Created in New Hampshire by the Stimulus

Stimulus: Millions in grants, tons of scrutiny

By TOM FAHEY
State House Bureau Chief

More than $400 million in federal stimulus money has come to New Hampshire this year, and more is on the way.

The Office of Legislative Budget Assistant reported last week that $413.6 million made its way to the state under a list of programs that involve education, highways, environmental, health and human services, energy and law enforcement.

So far, a total of 50 jobs have been created by the funding, 34 of them full time. The OES will be headed by a director whom Gov. John Lynch has not yet appointed. All five OES jobs are described as full-time temporary positions that will go out of existence in September 2011, the end of the federal fiscal yea

More People Oppose ObamaCare Plan

Forty-nine percent (49%) of U.S. voters now at least somewhat oppose the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats, while 46% at least somewhat favor it, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

This marks the first time that more voters lean against the plan than support it. Just two weeks ago, 50% were for the reform plan, and 45% were opposed.

Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings Day 1

Senator Sessions is speaking now and he is offering a strong statement and case against activist judges.

The more and more that Senator Sessions speaks, the more and more I like and appreciate him. Hopefully, higher office is in his mind for the future.

Update: Sotomayor's face has not changed throughout Senator Sessions' statement. No smile, no reaction to anything Sessions is saying.

Unless anything interesting or ground breaking occurs, I won't report much on these opening statements that really don't say much.

Update2: Here's Senator Sessions opening statement:

http://sessions.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressShop.NewsReleases&ContentRecord_id=748b6f9f-9c33-8369-5205-b6eb2429d3db

Update 3: Here is a good analysis of what the key players in Sotomayor's confirmation had to say about her:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/06/19/us/politics/0619-scotus.html

Update4: Senator Leahy has just said in a press conference that today will be only for statements and not questions.

Update5: The session was adjourned at 12:30 and will reconvene at 2:00 where Sotomayor will issue her statement after the remaining Democrat Senators will speak.

Update6: Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirstin Gillibrand of NY will be each given five minutes to introduce Sonia Sotomayor.
 Then, Sotomayor will speak.

Update7:  Sonia Sotomayor has now begun speaking.

Update8: Day 1 has concluded. Sonia Sotomayor said that she said her job is not to make the law, but to apply the law. But, her record does not show that and what she says in the past does not show that either.
