July 16th in American History

July 16, 1790

Congress declares Washington, D.C. new capital

On this day in 1790, the young American Congress declares that a swampy, humid, muddy and mosquito-infested site on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia will be the nation’s permanent capital. “Washington,” in the newly designated federal “District of Columbia,” was named after the leader of the American Revolution and the country’s first president: George Washington. It was Washington who saw the area’s potential economic and accessibility benefits due to the proximity of navigable rivers.

Strong Statement from the NRA Opposing Sotomayor's Confirmation

Joint Statement By Wayne LaPierre and Chris W. Cox On Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Nomination To The United States Supreme Court
Other than declaring war, neither house of Congress has a more solemn responsibility than the Senate’s role in confirming justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the Senate considers the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, Americans have been watching to see whether this nominee – if confirmed – would respect the Second Amendment or side with those who have declared war on the rights of America’s 80 million gun owners

Private Insurance would be Nonexistant if House Health Care Bill Passes

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

Sotomayor Confirmation Hearing Day Four (Updatedx7)

The questioning will begin at 930am. and it is expected that Senator Kyl will be speaking first. There are still 9 Senators left in the second round of questioning. Each Senator has 20 minutes to ask questions if they oblige to use that time. After the conclusion of the second round there will be witness panels. There are 31 witnesses that are expected to speak. Expected to speak are former pitcher David Cone, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayor Frank Ricci, among many others.

Update: The second round is close to concluding with four or five Senators remaining. The Republicans have asked for a third round of questioning and Senator Leahy has agreed to that. If any Senator wants to ask another round of questions they can, but this time they will have only 10 minutes to ask questions. After that, the witness panels will begin.

Update2: The third round of questioning has concluded and now witness panels will shortly begin.

Update3: Witness panels have now begun.

Here is a link to the witness:

http://judiciary.senate.gov/

Update4: Frank Ricci is now speaking.

Update5: The rest of the witnesses are now speaking.

Update6: The last panel of witnesses has five people on it. After that, the hearing will adjourn. The Senate Judiciary Committee has a vote set for Tuesday.

Update7: The last panel has now concluded and the hearing has officially completed. As I said before the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on Sotomayor on Tuesday. Watching this whole process I gained even more confidence that Senator Sessions is the right man to lead the party along with Senators DeMint, Coburn, and Inhofe. I thought he did a magnificent job in his first Supreme Court hearing as the ranking member. Sotomayor will get confirmed because like Senator Graham said that barring any meltdown she will get confirmed. She held her composure and did not have any meltdowns. I still can't get past all her contradictions because like President Obama says all the time words matter and her words in the past conflicted what she had to say during the hearing. There is no way she could explain her past statements and rulings, but during the hearing she completely avoided answering any questions. Its a Senators duty to protect the Constitution and if any Senator does not vote no on confirming Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court, they would be failing to live up to that promise. Now we just have to wait and see who votes yes and no and as always I will report on that as soon as it happens.

Hoyer Says Small Businesses Don't Make that Much Money So They Don't Qualify for the Tax Hikes

Hoyer Says Small Businesses Don't Make $280,000 Per Year So They Won't Be Hurt by Democrats' Planned $540-Billion Tax Hike
Wednesday, July 15, 2009
By Matt Cover

Washington (CNSNews.com) – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said that job growth and economic recovery would not be harmed by a Democratic plan to increase income taxes by $540 billion to pay for their health-care reform proposal because the tax hikes would not affect small businesses.

Hoyer also said he could not think of any small business owners who make enough money to qualify for the higher taxes.

Universal Health Care Not Working Out So Great in Massachusetts

Massachusetts in Suit Over Cost of Universal Care

Published: July 15, 2009

BOSTON — A hospital that serves thousands of indigent Massachusetts residents sued the state on Wednesday, charging that its costly universal health care law is forcing the hospital to cover too much of the expense of caring for the poor.

The hospital, Boston Medical Center, faces a $38 million deficit for the fiscal year ending in September, its first loss in five years. The suit says the hospital will lose more than $100 million next year because the state has lowered Medicaid reimbursement rates and stopped paying Boston Medical “reasonable costs” for treating other poor patients.
