'Cash for Clunkers' to be Suspended

AP sources: Govt to suspend 'cash for clunkers'
Jul 30 07:39 PM US/Eastern
By KEN THOMAS
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Congressional officials say the government plans to suspend the popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases.

The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The Federal Reserve Must be Audited

U.S. judge rules for Fed in Fox News Network request

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Thursday denied a bid by Fox News Network LLC seeking details from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve about the central bank's loans to companies affected by the financial crisis.

The owner of the Fox Business cable network made an initial request for documents in November last year under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) about the companies and funds they received between August 2007 and November 2008.

Time Magazine Should Just be Called Obama Magazine

This from the Media Blog on National Review Online:

Would You Like a Foot Massage Before We Start the Interview, Mr. President?   [Greg Pollowitz]

Thanks to reader MB-C for pointing out this Karen Tumulty interview with the president in Time magazine. Here's the nausea-inducing end (Tumulty's comments in bold):

Well, again, thank you very much.
Thank you so much.

I just so appreciate you doing this.
Well, I appreciate you. You've been doing a good job on the reporting on this.

Thank you so much.
It's hard stuff and you've been very serious about it, so we appreciate it.

Taxes for the Rich

America’s top 1 percent pay 40 percent of all taxes

Posted by: James Pethokoukis
Tags: Uncategorized, ,

The Tax Foundation review of new IRS data (through 2007) finds some remarkable things about America’s progressive tax system:

1) The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 40.4 percent of the total income taxes collected by the federal government — the highest percentage in modern history — while the top 1 percent paid 24.8 percent of the income tax burden.

2) The share of the tax burden borne by the top 1 percent now exceeds the share paid by the bottom 95 percent of taxpayers combined. In 2007, the bottom 95 percent paid 39.4 percent of the income tax burden. This is down from the 58 percent of the total income tax burden they paid twenty years ago.

Obama's Science Czar is Truly Frightening

My previous post, I linked to a story about Obama's Science Czar John Holdren and last week I linked to a story by conservative columnist Michelle Malkin about Holdren. Here is another article about John Holdren:

Obama’s Science Czar Said a Born Baby ‘Will Ultimately Develop Into a Human Being’
Tuesday, July 28, 2009
By Terence P. Jeffrey, Editor-in-Chief
(CNSNews.com) - President Obama’s top science adviser said in a book he co-authored in 1973 that a newborn child “will ultimately develop into a human being” if he or she is properly fed and socialized.

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being,” John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote in “Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions.”

Do You Think Trees Should Have Legal Standing to Sue in Court?

In the 70s, Obama's Science Adviser Endorsed Giving Trees Legal Standing to Sue in Court
Thursday, July 30, 2009
By Christopher Neefus

(CNSNews.com) – Since the 1970s, some radical environmentalists have argued that trees have legal rights and should be allowed to go to court to protect those rights.

The idea has been endorsed by John P. Holdren, the man who now advises President Barack Obama on science and technology issues.

Giving “natural objects” -- like trees -- standing to sue in a court of law would have a “most salubrious” effect on the environment, Holdren wrote  the 1970s.

July 30th in American History

July 30, 1956

President Eisenhower signs “In God We Trust” into law

On this day in 1956, two years after pushing to have the phrase “under God” inserted into the pledge of allegiance, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a law officially declaring “In God We Trust” to be the nation’s official motto. The law, P.L. 84-140, also mandated that the phrase be printed on all American paper currency. The phrase had been placed on U.S. coins since the Civil War when, according to the historical association of the United States Treasury, religious sentiment reached a peak. Eisenhower’s treasury secretary, George Humphrey, had suggested adding the phrase to paper currency as well.

Johnson signs Medicare into law

On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, which took place at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, former President Harry S. Truman was enrolled as Medicare's first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress.

Watergate affair approaches climax

Under coercion from the U.S. Supreme Court, President Richard M. Nixon releases subpoenaed White House recordings--suspected to prove his guilt in the Watergate cover-up--to special prosecutor Leon Jaworski. The same day, the House Judiciary Committee voted a third article of impeachment against the president: contempt of Congress in hindering the impeachment process. The previous two impeachment articles voted against Nixon by the committee were obstruction of justice and abuse of presidential powers.

No Need for Investigations on Sweetheart Deals

Democrat resists subpoenaing VIP mortgage records
Jul 30 03:04 PM US/Eastern
By LARRY MARGASAK
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Democrats have declined to subpoena available records that might reveal whether other members of Congress got discounted VIP mortgages from subprime lender Countrywide Financial Corp. similar to the sweetheart deals given Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd and Kent Conrad.

Republicans say they are willing to risk that the records now held by Bank of America may show that GOP lawmakers were also "friends of Angelo" who got preferential terms on personal mortgages at the behest of then-Countrywide CEO Angelo Mozilo.

Pork in Defense Bill, Even Though Robert Gates Say Those Projects are Not Needed to Fund Next Year

House Seems To Be Set on Pork-Padded Defense Bill

By R. Jeffrey Smith Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 30, 2009

The Democratic-controlled House is poised to give the Pentagon dozens of new ships, planes, helicopters and armored vehicles that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates says the military does not need to fund next year, acting in many cases in response to defense industry pressures and campaign contributions under an approach he has decried as "business as usual" and vowed to help end.
