On page 11 of the 533 page Friday afternoon document drop from the White House, a quote from an e-mail referring to the disastrous Air Force One flyby of lower Manhattan: "3 million New Yorkers did not have a need to know."

Page 22: "Will probably receive some local press, but WH (White House) shouldn't catch any questions about it."

Page 82: "The following press release will be offered when/if press inquiries are made." Love that "if." Apparently they thought it was possible no one in the press would ask about it.

WASHINGTON -- A key House panel approved its version of major health care reform package Friday night, setting the full House up for a debate on the legislation after its August recess.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, which voted Friday, was the last of three panels to approve a health bill. The vote was made possible by a deal brokered earlier this week between Democratic leaders and conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats, though health reform legislation still is being held up in one Senate committee.

A disparate collection of lawmakers and special interests is pushing to extend tax credits and other benefits — effectively proposing another economic stimulus with a price tag of at least $88 billion.

Their wish list applies to measures in February’s $787 billion stimulus that were passed to provide a temporary jolt to the economy.

Nearly six months later, these measures have developed entrenched constituencies, and members of both parties are pressing to retain favored priorities. Members are under acute pressure from voters to cushion workers and businesses from the worst recession in decades.

California Democrat Lois Capps, whose voting record was rated 100% pro-abortion by NARAL, introduced the faux "common ground" amendment that, while appearing to prohibit the abortion mandate in the healthcare overhaul, actually calls for the public plan to cover abortions and mandates that at least one abortion-covering plan be available in every U.S. region.  The amendment was passed 30-28.

The House passed emergency legislation Friday approving an additional $2 billion for the "cash for clunkers" program, whose immediate popularity this week threatened to sink the program.

Skipping over regular procedure to obtain an immediate floor vote, the House Democrats' legislation would shuffle around funds from the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an emergency stimulus for the original $1 billion budget for rebates on new cars that lawmakers worried had been exhausted in only a week.
