Hoyer: We Can Force People to Buy Health Insurance Because of the Constitution's General Welfare Clause

Hoyer Says Constitution’s ‘General Welfare’ Clause Empowers Congress to Order Americans to Buy Health Insurance
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
By Matt Cover

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) (AP Photo)
(CNSNews.com) – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said that the individual health insurance mandates included in every health reform bill, which require Americans to have insurance, were “like paying taxes.” He added that Congress has “broad authority” to force Americans to purchase other things as well, so long as it was trying to promote “the general welfare.”

Hopefully We Won't Have to be Seeing Scozzafava Any Longer

Here she is obviously so desperate that she held a press conference outside her opponent's campaign office. I also should mention that because of Newt Gingrich's support of her, he has no credibility to talk about conservative issues. He used the phrase big tent, but how big does he want the tent to be. Is he for inviting liberals into the party because that is what Scozzafava is. Also, I should mention again as I have before, that Rep. Jeb Hensarling also endorsed her. If you know of any other politician who has supported her, please leave me a comment.

By John Stanton

Senate Finance ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is raising concerns that a Department of Health and Human Services Web site that urges visitors to send an e-mail to President Barack Obama praising his health care reform plan may violate rules against government-funded propaganda.

The Web page is accessed through a “state your support” button featured prominently on the HHS Web site and carries a disclaimer that the Web site is maintained by HHS.

Obama Has a Presidential Approval Index Rating of -13

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 27% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -13. That’s just a point above the lowest level ever recorded for this President. It’s also the sixth straight day in negative double digits, matching the longest such streak (see trends).

Medicare for Everyone

House Dems want Medicare for everyone

By Mike Soraghan - 10/20/09 08:27 PM ET

Say hello to “Medicare Part E” — as in, “Medicare for Everyone.”

House Democrats are looking at re-branding the public health insurance option as Medicare, an established government healthcare program that is better known than the public option.

I Have to Come Up with a More Sarcastic Approach of Being Shocked

Bailout's hidden costs

SigTARP Neil Barofsky, overseer of the $700 billion TARP program, says the cost to taxpayers will be a lot greater than the government is letting on.

By David Goldman, CNNMoney.com staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The $700 billion bailout will ultimately cost taxpayers billions of dollars, but the government stands to lose much more than the money it's pouring into companies.

Neil Barofsky, special inspector general for Treasury's financial sector rescue, wrote in a report released Wednesday that the bailout has several hidden costs.

Is He Dead or Not?

First Sky News reported that the Lockerbie bomber has died, even though it was not substantiated by anybody else:

UK's Sky News reports Lockerbie bomber has died

LONDON (Reuters) – Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi has died, Britain's Sky News said on Wednesday, quoting "reports."

The British Foreign Office could not confirm the report and the Scottish government said it was checking the report.

Now, comes the report from his lawyer that he is still alive:

Lockerbie bomber still alive, Scottish lawyer says

LONDON (Reuters) – Lockerbie bomber Abdel Basset al-Megrahi is still alive, his Scottish lawyer said on Wednesday, dismissing a report that he had died.

"It's absolutely untrue," lawyer Tony Kelly told Reuters when asked if he could confirm a Sky News report that his client had died. "He's definitely not dead."

Another Reversal for Obama and this Time for Missile Defense?

Biden, Polish leaders agree on revised missile plan

UPDATED:

WARSAW -- The Obama administration reached a new agreement Wednesday with top Polish government officials to place a new generation of missile interceptors on Polish soil, a surprising turnabout from just a few weeks earlier when it appeared the United States was ready to abandon its missile defense program in Eastern Europe.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emerged from a lengthy private discussion to announce that Poland's participation in the missile defense system was, essentially, back on -- though in a new format that involves delivering a smaller number of defensive weapons in 2018.

It is Revealed Who Else was at the Closed Door Meeting with Obama on Monday

Maddow/Olbermann Invited to White House Chat with Obama, But Fox Isn't a News Organization?

Here's a curious turn in the White House vs. Fox News fight.

On Monday, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.

Police Did Not See Any Reason Why Scozzafava Would Call Them

Police called when reporter questions NY candidate

By VALERIE BAUMAN, Associated Press
Last updated: 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2009
ALBANY -- Police questioned a reporter from a conservative publication after receiving a call that he harassed a Republican candidate for Congress who refused to answer his questions about her positions on tax and health issues.

Lowville Village Police Chief Eric Fredenburg said officers responded to a call Monday night saying state Assemblywoman Dierdre Scozzafava "felt concern for her safety" during questioning by reporter John McCormack of the Weekly Standard. He wouldn't say who made the call.

"I don't believe it ever escalated to anything that would ever be classified as an emergency," Fredenburg said.
