Senator Dodd seeks dramatic restructuring of the federal financial regulatory system

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) circulated a 1,100-page bill on Tuesday that aims to dramatically remake the financial regulatory system.

The bill attempts to tackle many of the central questions of the financial crisis. But after months of negotiations and meetings behind closed doors with Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the bill represents primarily Dodd's goals.

The draft was highly anticipated on K Street because Dodd's office has managed to avoid nearly all leaks in recent weeks.

The Charleston County Republican Party's executive committee took the unusual step Monday night of censuring U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham for stepping across the GOP party line.

County Chairwoman Lin Bennett said the unanimous vote "is an effort to get his attention. They (party leaders) are just fed up, and they want him to know they're fed up."

Health vote pits Democrat vs. Democrat

Democrats who thought a vote against the sweeping health care package would inoculate them from political attack are facing serious blowback from angry constituents and interest groups on the left — fierce opposition that could prove as consequential as anything Republicans could have thrown at them. 

For some of the 39 House Democrats who opposed the bill, there are protests outside their offices and promises of retribution. For others, there are attempts to shut off their campaign money spigot. Still more are about to get drilled in a television ad campaign paid for by Democratic donors.

What they’ve all discovered is that there’s no safe harbor when it comes to the $1.2 trillion measure that the House passed Saturday.

Darcy Burner, executive director of the American Progressive Caucus Policy Foundation, said the anger over the vote was a natural outgrowth of the value liberals have placed on the health care push.

Walter Reed Officials Asked: Was Hasan Psychotic?

Starting in the spring of 2008, key officials from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences held a series of meetings and conversations, in part about Maj. Nidal Hasan, the man accused of killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others last week during a shooting spree at Fort Hood. One of the questions they pondered: Was Hasan psychotic?

"Put it this way," says one official familiar with the conversations that took place. "Everybody felt that if you were deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, you would not want Nidal Hasan in your foxhole."

In documents reviewed by NPR and conversations with medical officials at Walter Reed and USUHS, new details have emerged regarding serious concerns that officials raised about Hasan during his time at both institutions.

(CNSNews.com) - House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) says there is “no guarantee” that an amendment approved by the House on Saturday that prohibits federal funding of abortion in the health care bill will be retained in the final version of the bill. The bill must still go through a House-Senate conference committee and could be stripped out there.

'Obama must choose - Israel or Iran'


Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on the US to choose between Israel and Iran on Tuesday night, according to Iranian state media.

Ahmadinejad said that for a real change in relations to take place, a choice must be made.

World War I ends

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure.

Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day. A day where we remember all those who served in the armed forces of the United States. Teachers should emphasize today's importance and really the whole day should be about teaching and learning about our veterans. Schools should not have off because then no learning could be done. Unfortunately, the teaching and learning of our veterans has been ignored. Parents should also discuss with their children the importance of today and what it means. If it was not for those veterans who put their lives on the line, we would not be the America that we know it. Yes, I know many things our changing about America that most do not like, including me, and that is why it is so important to teach and discuss all the good that America has been and done for the world and our veterans have played a huge role in that.

If you know a veteran or if you see one anywhere thank him or her for their service. These people should not be forgotten. Politics should not be the major issue today. It should be about a day of thanking our veterans of the service to our country and the day that we forget to thank our veterans, this country will no longer be the same. We must never forget our veterans.
