Counterterrorism Officials Believe Pakistani Taliban Leader Mehsud is Dead, But Still No Confirmation

Intelligence official: US believes Mehsud is dead

WASHINGTON – U.S. counterterrorism officials believe Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud is dead following a missile attack last month, a senior intelligence official said Wednesday in the strongest signal that Washington has offered about the militant's fate.

Neither Pakistan nor the U.S. has officially confirmed the death of Mehsud, who commands an al-Qaida-allied movement that is blamed for scores of suicide bombings and is suspected in a deadly attack on a CIA base in Afghanistan late last year.

'Government Programs Next Year will Account for More than Half of all U.S. Health-Care Spending

Public Share of Health Tab to Top 50%

For the first time, government programs next year will account for more than half of all U.S. health-care spending, federal actuaries predict, as the weak economy sends more people into Medicaid and slows growth of private insurance.

The figures show how federal and state spending is taking a bigger role while Congress hesitates over a health-care overhaul.

Government health programs are a growing burden on the federal budget, which is running annual deficits of more than $1 trillion, and rising health costs continue to batter private industry.

By 2020, according to the new projections, about one in five dollars spent in the U.S. will go to health care, a proportion far beyond any other industrialized nation.

Virginia State Senate Votes No to Forcing Individuals to Purchase Health Insurance

Virginia Senate bills say no to requiring health insurance

Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 2, 2010

RICHMOND -- Virginia's Democratic-controlled state Senate passed measures Monday that would make it illegal to require individuals to purchase health insurance, a direct challenge to the party's efforts in Washington to reform health care.

The bills, a top priority of Virginia's "tea party" movement, were approved 23 to 17 as five Democrats who represent swing areas of the state joined all 18 Republicans in the chamber in backing the legislation.

Olbermann Lost 44% of His Audience Since Obama's Inauguration

Countdown begins for end of Keith Olbermann's 'Countdown'?

February 3, 2010

Remember Keith Olbermann?

He was the one-time must-see anti-Bush ranter who helped rescue MSNBC (yes, it's still on at night) from even worse oblivion years ago.

Well, quietly last month while no one was looking, hardly anyone was watching Keith Olbermann anymore.

...

In the most desirable TV demographic of 25-54, which Keith will soon outgrow himself, "Countdown" lost 44% of its audience from the beginning of President Obama's term until this year. It could have been worse -- say, 45%.

Greenpeace UK Calls for IPCC's Chairman Pachauri's Resignation

IPCC chief Rajendra Pachauri under pressure to go over glacier error

The head of the UN’s climate change body is under pressure to resign after one of his strongest allies in the environmental movement said his judgment was flawed and called for a new leader to restore confidence in climatic science.

Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has insisted that he will remain in post for another four years despite having failed to act on a serious error in the body’s 2007 report.

John Sauven, director of Greenpeace UK , said that Dr Pachauri should have acted as soon as he had been informed of the error, even though issuing a correction would have embarrassed the IPCC on the eve of the Copenhagen climate summit.

Hitler is Informed about the Demonsheep Campaign Ad

For a little background on what I am talking about. Yesterday, I posted on this blog, the campaign ad that Carly Fiorina launched attacking Tom Campbell, one of her opponents in the California Republican Senate Primary, by saying that he is a FCINO, a fiscal conservative in name only. The ad featured demonsheep.

I Don't think this Helps Democrats Chances

Details surface of Scott Lee Cohen's 2005 domestic violence arrest

SHOCKING PAST | Dem nominee for lt. gov was once accused of holding knife to woman’s neck

February 3, 2010

BY CHRIS FUSCO, DAVE McKINNEY, ABDON M. PALLASCH AND STEVE WARMBIR Staff Reporters

Scott Lee Cohen -- a pawnbroker who shocked state Democratic leaders Tuesday night by winning the party's nomination for lieutenant governor -- was arrested about four-and-a-half years ago and accused of holding a knife to a former live-in girlfriend's neck, newly obtained court records show.

The misdemeanor charge against Cohen was dropped weeks later when the woman -- who had just been found guilty of prostitution -- failed to show up to testify, according to those records.

Feingold Does Not Support Constitutional Amendment to Change First Amendment

Feingold opposes constitutional amendment to overturn SCOTUS decision

By J. Taylor Rushing - 02/04/10 01:53 PM ET

Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold (D) on Thursday said he opposes a constitutional amendment to overturn a controversial Supreme Court decision last week that allowed an influx of corporate spending in political campaigns.

Feingold, who along with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has worked passionately for more than a decade to limit the influence of money in politics, said he simply cherishes the Bill of Rights as it stands.

House Raises Debt Limit to $1.9 Trillion by a Vote of 217-212

House Votes to Hike Debt Limit

By Chad Pergram

 - FOXNews.com

The House of Representatives Thursday voted to raise the debt limit by $1.9 trillion. That vote raises the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion, a new high for the amount of debt the U.S. has ever carried.

As recently as 2001, the U.S. debt was only at $5.7 trillion. But exploded throughout the past decade after Sept. 11, 2001, amid record spending by the Bush and Obama administrations.

If Congress doesn't hike the debt ceiling, the U.S. would be unable make good on Social Security and Medicare payments.

The Senate approved the debt limit increase in mid-January on a 60-40 party-line vote.

The House vote was a close one, 217-212. All Republicans and more than 30 Democrats voted against raising the debt ceiling.

Dan Hynes Concedes to Pat Quinn in Illinois Democrat Gubernatorial Primary

Hynes concedes in emotional speech

Fighting back tears, Dan Hynes conceded the Democratic primary election for governor Thursday morning and endorsed Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s reelection bid after a bitter campaign that came down to just 8,000 votes.

“The people have spoken and the votes have been counted,” Hynes said in an emotional but gracious speech.

“We rose up but fell just a little short,” the state comptroller said. “We did the right thing, made sure all the votes were counted and now we’re sure: That wasn’t us. And rather than contest or demand anything further, let’s do the right thing again."

With all precincts reporting, Quinn defeated Hynes by only 8,090 votes, 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent.

President Obama Should Really Stick to his Teleprompter and Not Improvise

President Obama: “Every Economist from the Left and Right” Says Stimulus Has Saved or Created At Least Two Million Jobs

President Obama veered off script – and away from the facts – when he spoke about the stimulus bill today in Nashua, NH.

“Now, if you hear some of the critics, they'll say, well, the Recovery Act, I don't know if that's really worked, because we still have high unemployment,” the president said. “But what they fail to understand is that every economist, from the left and the right, has said, because of the Recovery Act, what we've started to see is at least a couple of  million jobs that have either been created or would have been lost. The problem is, 7 million jobs were lost during the course of  this recession.”

Um, it’s not true that “every economist” has said the Recovery Act has saved or created two million jobs.

...

The president was originally supposed to say, according to his prepared remarks, that “I understand why some people are wondering whether the Recovery Act has really worked.  Because while these steps mean 2 million Americans are working right now who’d otherwise be unemployed, and our economy is growing again instead of shrinking – and growing at the fastest rate in 6 years – we lost 7 million jobs during this recession.”

Maybe for SOme Republicans that Might Hold True, But You are Still Way Off Base

Boehner: No difference in beliefs between GOP and tea partiers

By Michael O'Brien - 02/04/10 10:51 AM ET

There aren't any major differences in beliefs between "Tea Party" activists and the Republican Party, the top House Republican said Thursday.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said the GOP and the groups conservative activists across the country are indistinguishable when it comes to policy.

"There really is no difference between what Republicans believe in and what the tea party activists believe in," Boehner said during an appearance on the conservative Mike Gallagher's radio show.
