'Losing Our Independence'

Losing Our Independence
by Cal Thomas

As more Americans, especially the unemployed, come to rely on government to take care of them, we risk losing our independence.

The Washington Times reports American reliance on government is at an all-time high. This is not our Founders' America. We seem to have declined from a "can-do" spirit, to "can't do" -- at least without government -- and soon, unless we change our ways, "won't do."

Our forebears practiced self-reliance, living within one's means and helping neighbors. Much of our modern economy is built on overspending, satisfying desires, pretense, envy, greed, and a sense of entitlement. Politicians who do not wish to disabuse us of such things keep seeking ways to prop up the falling house of cards. Who is brave enough tell us we can't go on living -- and spending -- like this?

Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) has temporarily replaced Di*k Cheney as the Darth Vader of America. His one-man blockade of unemployment and COBRA benefits stems from his belief that we can't keep spending money we don't have and that any extension of unemployment benefits should be paid for. Big media and liberal Democrats, many of whom denounced the far smaller Bush administration deficits, pilloried him. Having made his point on fiscal responsibility, late Tuesday, Bunning agreed to allow a vote on extending unemployment benefits, highway construction funding and spending on other federal programs. In return, Senate leaders agreed to allow votes on amendments Bunning will introduce to cut enough spending in other areas to pay for it all.

'No Allies, But Plenty of Enemies'

No Allies, But Plenty of Enemies
What are the advantages of being a friend of the U.S. these days?

Almost 30 years after losing a war over the Falkland Islands, Argentina is once again warning Britain that it still wants back what it calls the Malvinas.

Argentina is now angry over a British company’s oil exploration off the windswept islands in what it considers its South Atlantic backyard.

Although nominally democratic, the unpopular Kirchner government in Buenos Aires has claimed that the sparsely settled islands are a symbolic matter of Spanish-speaking pride throughout Latin America and belong to Argentina because the islands were Spain’s in the 19th century.

In response to all this, the Obama administration announced that it would remain neutral. Aside from the fact that the Falkland Islanders wish to remain British — and aside from our history of supporting Britain’s claim, including during the 1982 war — there are lots of reasons why our neutrality here is a bad idea.

Britain is a longstanding NATO member. It has bled side-by-side with America in two world wars, Korea, and two conflicts in Iraq, and continues to do so in Afghanistan. The United Kingdom still shares close linguistic, cultural, and historical affinities with the United States.

We do not support all that the British do; nor do they always support us. But our centuries-old friendship should earn Britain special support from us in its disputes, even in the relatively unimportant Falklands mess. If Britain is not considered an ally, then America no longer has real allies.

And perhaps that is the point after all. The Obama administration does not wish to see the world so divided between allies and the rest.

'This War Would be Hell, Too'

This War Would Be Hell, Too
The U.S. is not prepared to defend itself against cyberattacks.

If a top intelligence expert said America was not prepared for war and, indeed, that if we went to war “we would lose,” that would worry you, wouldn’t it? Start worrying.

The expert is Mike McConnell, who served as director of the National Security Agency under President Clinton and as director of national intelligence under President Bush. He was referring not to a conventional war, a guerrilla war, or an insurgency. He was referring to a cyberwar. But understand: Cyberwar does not mean fun and video games. McConnell told a Senate committee last week that the risk we face from cyberattacks “rivals nuclear weapons in terms of seriousness.”

Cybercombatants could cause massive blackouts lasting for months. They could destroy the electronic processes on which our banking, commerce, and financial systems have been built, stealing — or simply wiping out — vast amounts of wealth. They could put our air-transportation system in jeopardy. They might even be able to cripple our defense and national-security infrastructures. It is possible to defend against such threats. But we are not doing it adequately.

McConnell has been sounding this alarm for some time. Most of the media, and therefore most Americans, have not been paying attention.

House May Vote for the "Jobs" Bill on Thursday

House could vote Thursday on jobs bill

By Walter Alarkon and Lauren Victoria Burke - 03/03/10 05:59 PM ET
House Democrats are nearing a deal with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) that could allow a vote on the Senate jobs bill Thursday, according to senior members.

Democratic leaders wanted to quickly pass the $15 billion Senate measure, which includes $13 billion for a tax credit for small businesses who hire new workers. President Barack Obama had called on Congress to send him job-creation legislation "without delay."

RNC's New Strategy

Exclusive: RNC document mocks donors, plays on 'fear'

By BEN SMITH | 3/3/10 4:23 PM EST

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism."

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.”

The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said.

Hoyer knew of allegation against Rep. Massa

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer says he received a report last month of allegations of misconduct against a New York congressman who has announced he will not seek a second term.

A statement from Hoyer's office late Wednesday says he was told the week of Feb. 8 about the allegations by a staff member in Rep. Eric Massa's office. Hoyer directed Massa to report the allegations to the House Ethics Committee within 48 hours. Hoyer says he received confirmation within 48 hours that the Ethics Committee had received the report and would review the allegations.
