Just Who is the Guantanamo Bay Detainee that a Judge Ordered to be Released Today?

Judge Orders Notorious Terrorist Freed from Gitmo

A federal judge says 9/11 al Qaeda recruiter should be freed.

BY Thomas Joscelyn

March 22, 2010 7:22 PM

According to the Wall Street Journal, a district judge has ordered Mohamedou Slahi – a known al Qaeda recruiter who worked for Osama bin Laden – freed from Guantanamo. The Journal’s account does not explain the judge’s reasoning and the decision was not immediately available online. But the decision is inexplicable in light of Slahi’s notorious track record. There is no doubt that Mohamedou Slahi is one of the worst terrorists held at Gitmo. (See here for a previous summary of Slahi’s dossier.)

Recruiter for the September 11 attacks

Among Slahi's most notorious recruits were four of the September 11 conspirators, all of whom were members of the infamous Hamburg cell. Slahi’s role in recruiting the Hamburg cell for al Qaeda is explained on pages 165 and 166 of the 9/11 Commission’s final report. Slahi arranged for Ramzi Binalshibh, al Qaeda's point man for the 9/11 operation, and three of his cohorts to travel from Germany to Afghanistan so that they could train in al Qaeda's camps and swear allegiance to Osama bin Laden. Binalshibh's three friends were: Mohammed Atta, Marwan al Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah--the suicide pilots of American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, and United Airlines Flight 93, respectively.

Along with Binalshibh, Shehhi and Jarrah met with Slahi in late 1999. The three originally wanted to travel to Chechnya to fight, but Slahi convinced them to travel to Afghanistan for training first instead. The 9/11 Commission explained:

Republicans Lose First Objection of Reconciliation Bill and a Major Loss for Republicans

Senate Democrats get favorable ruling

By MANU RAJU | 3/22/10 10:26 PM EDT

A ruling by Senate parliamentarian Alan Frumin handed Democrats a major victory Monday night, beating back a GOP push to declare a key tax proposal in the health care bill out of order.

After hearing arguments on both sides, Frumin said that Democratic plans to push back an excise tax on so-called Cadillac insurance plans until 2018 was within the purview of budget rules allowable under the filibuster-proof reconciliation process. The GOP had challenged the language on the grounds that it violated a 1974 budget law because of its impact on the Social Security statute, and was thus subject to a point of order that would doom the bill in the Senate.

Now Republicans say there are a series of other challenges they plan to levy against the bill in the coming days, and believe there is still a chance to knock out the Cadillac tax by arguing it violates the so-called Byrd rule, named after Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), which states that extraneous provisions not related to the budget can be stripped from reconciliation packages. Frumin has not yet ruled on that objection.

Liberal Caucus Leader to Introduce "Robust Public Option"

Liberal caucus leader will introduce new public option bill

By Michael O'Brien - 03/22/10 04:14 PM ET
A leader of the House liberals' caucus said Monday she'll introduce new legislation to revive the public option.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), the co-chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she plans to unveil legislation to add the government-run option to the national healthcare exchange established by legislation President Barack Obama is to sign tomorrow.

"We will introduce a robust public option bill on the very day the president signs the reconciliation bill into law," Woolsey said Monday during an interview on MSNBC.

Planned Parenthood Pleased with ObamaCare

Planned Parenthood: Pro-Abortion Bill a Victory, Executive Order Meaningless
by Steven Ertelt

, 2010

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Planned Parenthood called the pro-abortion health care bill the House approved late Sunday night a victory and applauded the financial windfall it expected to reap as a result. The abortion business also dismissed the executive order President Barack Obama promised Congressman Bart Stupak as harmless.

“For more than a year, Planned Parenthood has worked tirelessly for a health care" bill, its president Cecile Richards said in a statement today. "It's a huge victory for women's health, but our work isn't over yet."

With passage of the legislation, "monumental progress was made toward achieving these goals."

House Democrats Now Switch to "Jobs" Agenda

Healthcare finished, House Dems switch to jobs agenda

By Walter Alarkon - 03/22/10 07:54 PM ET

House Democrats are pivoting to a jobs agenda hours after sending President Barack Obama landmark healthcare legislation.

Democrats are planning votes as soon as Tuesday on an $18 billion bill that funds infrastructure projects and provides small-business tax breaks, as well as a disaster-relief measure that includes $600 million for a summer youth jobs program.

Blanche Lincoln Opposes House Reconciliation Bill

Lincoln opposes House Reconciliation bill

By Jay Heflin - 03/22/10 09:19 AM ET

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) will oppose the House reconciliation health bill when her chamber votes on it later this week.

"The Reconciliation package devised by the House includes matter unrelated to health care and employs a legislative process that wasn't subject to the same transparency and thorough debate that we used in the Senate," she said in prepared remarks. "I cannot support this process."

The Senate needs 51 votes to pass the reconciliation package. So Lincoln's vote is not as crucial as it was to pass the Senate health plan, which needed 60 votes.

Holder's Future Uncertain?

Holder's future uncertain amid terror trial disputes

US Attorney General Eric Holder took office pledging a sharp shift away from the last administration's policies, but an apparent change of heart in the White House could see the top lawyer leave his job.

Holder, 59, is the first African-American to hold the top legal post, and was generally regarded with bipartisan respect when he took office.

But a series of gaffes, fights with both Republicans and Democrats, and apparent disagreements between him and the White House have left Holder looking increasingly embattled.

After Helping to Destroy Our Country, Stupak went to Party

HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Dems Tune Inn, Rock Out

By Emily Heil and Elizabeth Brotherton
Roll Call Staff
March 22, 2010, 11:46 a.m.

What better way to celebrate passing history-making legislation than kicking back at a dive bar famous for its cheap beer and taxidermy-heavy décor? A large group of House Democrats defied cigar-and-champagne stereotypes by partying down until the wee hours after the health care vote at the decidedly downscale Tune Inn on Pennsylvania Avenue.

HOH spies say the gaggle of jubilant Democrats included Rep. John Larson (Conn.), who got a roar of welcome when he entered the bar; Rep. Joe Crowley (N.Y.), who was briefly spotted standing behind the bar, handing out drinks; and Reps. John Boccieri (Ohio), Melissa Bean (Ill.), Tom Perriello (Va.) and Jerry Costello (Ill.).

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), who had been the center of attention all weekend after resisting the abortion-related language in the bill but ultimately voting for the package, was among Tune Inn’s revelers. An HOH spy says Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) planted a giant kiss on Stupak’s cheek.

The celebration continued until the bar issued its last call for drinks, our tipsters say. And they report that when Crowley exited the bar, he did so to celebratory chants of “Crow-ley, Crow-ley!”

Judge Orders the Release of Guantanamo Bay Detainee with Ties to 9/11 Attacks

Judge Orders Release of Gitmo Detainee With Ties to 9/11 Attacks

Monday, March 22, 2010

WASHINGTON —  A suspected Al Qaeda organizer once called "the highest value detainee" at Guantanamo Bay was ordered released by a federal judge in an order issued Monday.

Mohamedou Ould Slahi was accused in the 9/11 Commission report of helping recruit Mohammed Atta and other members of the Al Qaeda cell in Hamburg, Germany, that took part in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Military prosecutors suspected Slahi of links to other Al Qaeda operations, and considered seeking the death penalty against him while preparing possible charges in 2003 and 2004.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson granted Slahi's petition for habeas corpus, effectively finding the government lacked legal grounds to hold him. The order was classified, although the court said it planned to release a redacted public version in the coming weeks.

Senator Ben Nelson of the Cornhusker Kickback Fame will Vote Against the Reconciliation Bill

Via Yuval Levin:

NELSON STATEMENT ON RECONCILIATION BILL

March 22, 2010 – Today, Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson issued this statement on health care reform and the reconciliation bill before the Senate:

“Congress has passed historic health reforms that will insure 220,000 more Nebraskans and 30 million Americans who today have no health coverage. That, in turn, will help stop the cost-shifting when the uninsured can’t pay their medical bills and the tab is picked up by everyone else through higher costs and insurance premiums. Health reform also puts an end to dropping insured Americans when they get sick and, finally, guarantees health coverage for those with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes.

“With these and other major improvements, Congress has given a green light to much-needed private insurance reforms without a government takeover of health care. As a result, Nebraskans will see lower health care costs, better quality care and a greater peace of mind that a major illness or injury won’t bankrupt them.

“For these and other reasons, I supported the Senate bill approved by the House and sent to the President.

“That said, however, I will vote against the House reconciliation package of add-ons now before the Senate.
