'Tainting the Tea Party'

Tainting the Tea Party
by Brent Bozell

During the Bush years, the news media were the promoters of protest, the champions of dissent. Denouncing the president as a brain-damaged warmonger was the most patriotic thing you could do (just ask the Dixie Chicks), and it was guaranteed to please the press.

On MSNBC before the Iraq War in 2003, David Shuster elevated the "anti-war" movement as the equivalent of the United States military, only with a higher morality: "The size of the demonstrators, at least here, at least in Europe, seems to underscore that there are now perhaps two world superpowers," he told Chris Matthews. "There's the United States, and then there are those millions of people who took to the streets opposing U.S. policy."

My, how times -- and standards -- change. On the weekend of the vote for a massive government intervention in the health-insurance market, these same reporters had a different take. The Tea Party protesters were not going to be hailed for their courageous and patriotic use of their free time. They were going to be smeared for daring to be.

'Our Man in Jeddah'

Our Man in Jeddah
What will America’s envoy tell the rulers of the “Muslim world”?

Last month, President Obama announced the appointment of Rashad Hussain as ambassador to the Organization of the Islamic Conference. By video, Obama told attendees at something called the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar, that Hussain was not just “an accomplished lawyer and trusted member of my White House staff,” but also a “hafiz” — a Muslim who has memorized the entire Koran.

That reminded me: George Shultz, when he served as secretary of state under President Reagan, would routinely bring new ambassadors into his office where he kept a large globe. “Show me the country you’ll be representing,” he would say. Most of the time, the diplomat would give the globe a spin, abruptly halting its motion to indicate Botswana, Bhutan, Brunei, or whatever country he’d be calling home for the next few years. Shultz would shake his head. “No,” he would say. “You’ll be representing the United States of America. Never forget that.”

The controversy over the appointment of Hussain, 31, has centered on comments he made regarding the trial of Sami al-Arian, a University of South Florida professor: He called it a “politically motivated persecution.” Al-Arian had been accused of aiding the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. He eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy.

Obama is Systematically Destroying Our Country and Making Us Less Safe One Step at a Time

U.S., Russia Reach Breakthrough Agreement to Reduce Nuclear Arsenals

AP

After long and trying negotiations, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are to sign the treaty in two weeks in Prague, once final technical details are worked out, officials in Washington and Moscow said.

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. and Russia reached a breakthrough agreement Wednesday for a historic treaty to reduce the nuclear arsenals of the former Cold War rivals, the most significant pact in a generation and an important milestone in the decades-long quest to lower the risk of global nuclear war.

After long and trying negotiations, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are to sign the treaty in two weeks in Prague, once final technical details are worked out, officials in Washington and Moscow said. The accord is expected to cut the number of long-range nuclear weapons held by each side to about 1,500, and it raises hopes for further disarmament in the years ahead.

Netanyahu Holding His Ground and Not Caving

No Sign of Progress After U.S. Talks With Netanyahu

FOXNews.com

American officials say last-minute talks between Netanyahu and U.S. Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell had not resolved tensions over Israeli construction in territory claimed by the Palestinians.

The U.S. and Israel have failed to heal their deepest dispute in decades as a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ended without resolution to the rift.

American officials said late Wednesday that last-minute talks between Netanyahu and U.S. Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell had not resolved tensions over Israeli construction in territory claimed by the Palestinians.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were confidential.

Grassley Amendment that would Close the Loophole that would Force New Health Care Law to Apply to the President and Top Administration Officials Fails to Pass

Via Politico's Live Pulse:

Senate rejects attempt to close loophole

An amendment that would have applied the new health care law to the president, vice president, top White House cabinet members and staffers and certain Congressional staffers failed Wednesday night, 43-56.

Three Democrats—Evah Bayh of Indiana, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska—broke with their party to vote in favor of the motion to waive the point of order on the amendment.

The current law signed by President Barack Obama Tuesday applies to members of Congress and their staffs, but includes a loophole that does not require committee or leadership staffers to participate in the exchanges established by the government.

Senate Republicans Find a Way to Force the Reconciliation Bill to have to Go Back to the House to be Voted on Again

GOP Forces New House Vote on Health Care Bill

AP

Republicans succeed in forcing a change in a measure altering Obama's newly enacted health care overhaul, meaning the bill will have to return to the House for final congressional approval.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Republicans learned early Thursday that they will be able to kill language in a measure altering President Barack Obama's newly enacted health care overhaul, meaning the bill will have to return to the House for final congressional approval.

It appeared initially that deleting the provisions, dealing with Pell grants for low-income students, should not cause major problems for Democrats hoping to rush the bill to Obama and avoid prolonging what has been a politically painful ordeal for the party. Democrats described the situation as a minor glitch, but did not rule out that Republicans might be able to remove additional sections of the bill.
