Updated: Scott, Thurmond Earn Spots in South Carolina Runoff
State Rep.
Tim Scott and Charleston County Councilman
Paul Thurmond have earned spots in a runoff in South Carolina's 1st district GOP primary.
With nearly 97 percent of votes counted Scott had 32 percent of the
vote while Thurmond, the son of the legendary late Sen. Strom Thurmond
(R-S.C.), had 16 percent.
Meanwhile Carroll "Tumpy" Campbell III, the son of the state's former governor, just missed the runoff by taking 14 percent.
If Scott, who is the only African-American Republican in the South
Carolina Legislature, can keep the momentum through a runoff, he will
have a good chance of being the first black Republican in Congress
since former Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) as the winner of the GOP
nomination in the 1st will be favored in the race to replace retiring
Rep. Henry Brown (R).
